Double Bed Buying Guide

Double Bed Buying Guide

Double beds are a common sight across the UK, and we're pretty sure that almost every home will have at least one! The much-loved sleep companion for couples, and an upgraded sleep for solo sleepers, they're tried, tested and beloved. But how do you know if a double bed will meet your needs? We've put together this handy guide to answer all the most commonly asked questions!

What are the measurements of a double bed frame?

As with all beds, there are multiple ways to list the dimensions, with double beds measuring:

  • 135 x 190cm
  • 4'6" x 6'3"
  • 54" x 75"

This makes a double bed suitable for larger bedrooms, with space for two adults to sleep comfortably next to each other. Not sure if buying a double bed is what you'd like? Our bed size guide provides a wealth of helpful information about all the sizes we offer.

Can children sleep in a double bed?

Yes, a child can sleep in a double bed as long as you add extra safety precautions. Children under the age of 3 should ideally sleep in a bed that is lower to the ground and features railings along the sides, to reduce the risk of falling out. Older children and teenagers will find the extra space a double bed provides a great way to stretch out as they sleep, ensuring they get maximum comfort and support!

The primary consideration for children over the age of 3 is that you have enough space in their bedroom, as a double bed measures 135 x 190cm, which will limit the amount of floor space available for play. If playtime is more important to you, then we recommend checking out our expansive range of kids' beds, which features everything from toddler beds to space-saving high sleepers. Our kids' beds buying guide provides more information on the types available, to help ensure you buy the right bed for their needs.

Are double beds suitable for solo sleepers?

Yes, our double bed frames are perfect for solo sleepers! A single bed frame measures 90 x 190cm (3' x 6'3"), which, as the name suggests, is capable of hosting a single person. Double beds are larger, measuring 135 x 190cm, or 4'6" x 6'3", which means they're an extra 45cm (1'6") wider. As such, a solo sleeper has all the space they need to stretch out at night without having to worry about falling out of bed.

What's the difference between a small double and a double bed?

The primary difference between a small double bed and a double bed is their width, with a small double measuring 120cm (4') wide, compared to a double measuring 135cm (4'6") wide. They're the same height, with both being 190cm (6'3") in length, and both are capable of sleeping one person or two.

Please note that two people sleeping on a small double will find it a much snugger fit than a double, as it is 15cm thinner than a standard double.

How much room do I need for a double bed?

There are no specific requirements for room size when it comes to a double bed, but you'll want to ensure that you have enough space to get out from both sides and go around the end. This means that you should aim to have at least a foot of extra space on all sides. If you choose a double bed with drawers, you may need more space to open the drawers fully.

It's also important to consider if you want extra furniture. Bedside tables, wardrobes, and chests of drawers will all require additional space, so be sure to measure your bedroom and double-check the sizing of all the pieces of bedroom furniture you plan to add, including your double bed. Don't forget that some types, such as double TV beds, may be slightly larger than the standard recommended size due to the larger footboard, which accommodates a TV.

Can I buy a double bed with storage?

We have lots of storage double beds available to buy, with our two main options being the following:

  • Ottoman storage double beds – these beds offer the entire interior of the bed frame as storage, providing a discreet way to store your items. Accessing them is usually by using a lift strap or a dedicated handle and pulling up. This activates the hydraulic ottoman lift mechanism, which lifts the frame with your mattress on, revealing the space inside.
  • Double beds with drawers – great for those who need space but don't need to go all out, these beds feature underbed drawers which can be pulled out as needed. Some beds have drawers on either side, others have drawers at the end of the bed, and others feature a combination of both.

We also have double bookcase beds, which, as their name suggests, have built-in shelving in the headboard that resembles a mini bookcase. These are perfect if you want a little more display space, or need somewhere to shelve your favourite reads!

What size duvet works best for a double bed frame?

When it comes to choosing the best duvet size for a double bed, it primarily comes down to personal preference. Obviously, a double duvet will fit perfectly onto your bed frame, but if you like to feel extra cosy, then you could opt for a king-size duvet instead. This could be a perfect idea for couples, who will be able to enjoy the extra duvet without needing to fight over it at night!

Another great idea for couples, in particular, is to consider having two single duvets. This means there's no fighting over the covers, and it also allows you to choose the tog that suits your sleep style. A hot sleeper can opt for a lower tog rating, and a cooler sleeper can choose something higher. The size of a double bed means two single covers will be more than enough!
