Space-Saving Beds: Which Should I Choose?
Bedrooms are multifunctional spaces, and more than ever, we need our beds to be multifunctional as well. It’s no secret that space in our homes is at a premium. Between 1930 and 2020, the average bedroom size decreased from 165.7 to 141.5 square feet. Not only do we have less space to play with but as house prices continue to rise, upsizing to a larger property is out of reach for many homeowners.
Finding space to store everything can be challenging and homeowners need to use the space in their homes wisely. Whether you’ve got a small bedroom, an attic room with sloping ceilings or are furnishing a shared bedroom, we're here to help.
In this guide, we’ll explore space-saving beds in detail so you can choose the right one for your space and needs.
What is a space-saving bed?
A space-saving bed frame is exactly what it says - a bed that will help you save space in your home. This could be a smaller-sized bed, a frame with built-in storage, or something multi-functional, such as a kids bed with a built-in desk.
Do I need a space-saving bed?
Whether or not you need a space-saving bed will depend on your available space, what you need the bed for, and whether you need it to do more than simply offer a space to sleep. Some of the reasons that can lead people to need a space-saving bed include:
1. Having a small bedroom
Whether for a box room or your home runs on the smaller side, a space-saving bed is a must-have if you've got a small bedroom. From smaller beds to beds with storage, there are plenty of ways to make a small bedroom work for you, without feeling like your bed is dominating the whole space.
2. Furnishing a small bedroom
Sometimes, children need to share a bedroom. Two people in one space mean twice the number of beds, which means a space-saver bed can give them all the space they need to sleep without skimping on space to play!
3. Having an unusually shaped bedroom
Some bedrooms are simply unusually shaped, so you can be limited in what type of bed you can fit in it. Bedrooms with odd angles or sloped ceilings mean you need to be creative in what type of bed you opt for, such as a side-opening ottoman bed for a slanted ceiling.
4. Needing a space for guests
Having a guest over is always exciting, but it can be a little stressful if you don't have somewhere for them to sleep. Space-saving beds can also be useful here, as they can mean your guest bedroom is only a guest room when you need it to be. The rest of the time, the space can be whatever you need it to be, from the dressing room to the home office. Great options include sofa beds or trundles that mean you can sleep two with the trundle stored underneath the bed when not in use.
5. Having lots of things to store away
Keeping your home tidy can be more complicated if you have a lot of things, as you might run out of storage space quickly. A space-saving bed isn't just about size but also about what it can offer you. If you have too many things to store away, a storage bed can save you plenty of space by providing extra storage room.
What types of space-saving beds are there?
Many space-saver beds are available to suit all requirements, from simply making the most of a small room to increasing your storage in your home. Some of the most popular space-saving bed ideas include:
Space-saving storage beds
With a useful storage bed, you can give yourself plenty of extra storage without needing extra furniture. There are plenty of styles to choose from, including ottoman beds with discreet storage inside the bed frame, bookcase beds with shelving in the headboard, and beds with under-bed drawers. Space-saving guest beds
Have friends or family stay over frequently? Make sure you're always ready for guests, whether they're planned or a surprise, with a space-saving guest bed. If you've got the space, then a day bed or a sofa bed is ideal for use in a guest bedroom or a home office.
Day beds offer a sophisticated look that is perfect to lounge on during the day before sleeping comfortably at night. On the other hand, sofa beds are great for living rooms or home offices as they can be used as actual sofas before being turned into a bed when needed!
If you don't have the space to accommodate an extra bed, then a trundle or folding bed can be a great choice. As their name suggests, folding beds can be folded and stored away when unused. This means you could store them wherever you have space, whether it's a cupboard or wardrobe. Trundle beds feature a second bed underneath the frame, which can be pulled out when needed. This means your guests get all the comfort of a standard bed temporarily!
Space-saving kids beds
Making sure your kids have enough space to sleep, play, and study can be tricky - especially if their bedroom isn't the biggest! Thankfully, plenty of space-saving kids' beds are available to make life easy! Bunk beds, or triple sleepers, are a great choice if you need siblings to share a room or your child is a social butterfly with their sleepovers. And because we live in an innovative world, many of these bunk beds are packed with extra features such as shelving along the back of the bunks, underbed storage drawers, wardrobes or even built-in desks!
These features aren't exclusive to beds for multiple sleepers, though - our cabin beds, mid-sleepers and high-sleepers are perfect for solo sleepers and are also available with many of these features. This means that even though your child has a small bedroom, they aren't losing out on play or study time! Not sure what a mid sleeper or a high sleeper is? Our guide discusses the differences between the two to help you make the right buying decision.
Do you need to do more research before purchasing a bed for your child? Our handy kids' bed buying guide offers plenty of useful tips, such as recommended ages for certain beds. We've also included plenty of extra info about bunk beds, such as safety information, what type of mattress you need, and more in our bunk bed guide.
Space-saving beds by size
The space you have in your bedroom will dictate what bed size you can accommodate. If you have plenty of space, then a king-size bed could be perfect, but for many, a smaller bed, such as a single bed, will be the ideal choice to save on space. Other sizes that work great in small spaces include small single beds, which, as their name suggests are even smaller than a standard single, and small double beds, which are slightly larger than single beds but still smaller than a traditional double.
Plenty of beds in these sizes are available with storage options and are ideal for adults and kids to sleep comfortably, so they'll be great in any home!
