Having a hard time sleeping due to your snoring habits, or is your partner keeping you awake at night? No matter what the case, we’re here to help solve some of your sleeping problems with a range of easy lifestyle tips!
This week is National Snoring Week, a time to raise awareness about the more significant impacts of snoring on our health, well-being, and overall mood. We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of sleep; in fact, a lack of sleep can affect our general functioning, encourage us to make unhealthy food choices, and lower our mood.
We all deserve a proper rest to give us the best chance of tackling the day ahead, repairing our bodies and remaining focused. As adults, it’s recommended that we get between 7 and 9 hours of quality sleep. So don’t let snoring get in the way of your beauty sleep! We've worked with Katherine Hall, a psychologist in sleep from Somnus Therapy, to give you our top tips, and you’ll be on the way to a night of blissful sleep. Whether it’s soaking in the shower or consuming 2 litres of water a day, there’s something everyone can try.
Let’s get ready to stop snoring!
1. Repeat your vowels out loud
Anti-snoring throat exercises are a great way to strengthen the muscles in your throat and stop them from vibrating as you sleep – the cause of snoring. A few times a day, spend a few minutes repeating each of the vowels (a-e-i-o-u) out loud, and over time you’ll strengthen those all-important muscles.
2. Take a hot shower before bed
In many cases, snoring is caused by allergies irritating the nasal passages and causing them to narrow. Have a hot shower before bed, and the steam will help to moisten those nasal passages and help you breathe better during the night; in turn, this should ease any snoring problems.
3. Eat earlier
If you go to bed on a full stomach, extra pressure is exerted on your chest and lungs, which can, in turn, lead to snoring. Try to eat your evening meal at least four hours before you go to bed; this way, it’s well on the way to being digested by the time you go to sleep and this extra pressure is relieved from your body.
4. Stay hydrated
Hydration may not seem like something you’d commonly link to snoring issues; however, there is a link there. Snoring is often caused by secretions in the nasal passages; when you’re dehydrated, these secretions can become much thicker and can make it harder to breathe, leading to snoring.
5. Do mouth workouts
Much like the first tip, this tip is designed to help exercise the muscles in your mouth that control snoring. One way to do this is to slide the tip of your tongue backwards along the roof of your mouth as far back as it will go, or just press your tongue to the roof of your mouth and push.
