6 Tips For Creating A Space-Themed Bedroom

Space, the final frontier…and source of endless imagination for children and adults alike. Humans have always been fascinated by the vast expanse beyond our little blue planet, so it's no surprise that this interest is widespread among children, particularly with big franchises such as Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy existing.

So, how do you incorporate the endless nature of space into a child's bedroom without making it too dull, dark, or drab? We've come up with six tips to create a beautiful, stylish space that aligns with your child's interests.

How to create the space-themed bedroom of their dreams

Space

1. Think space colours

Let's get the obvious out of the way; when we think of space, we obviously think of the colour black, but this can be a little harsh for a child's bedroom. Instead, think of colours associated with space. This could be deep navy blues reminiscent of the atmosphere around Earth as we venture into space, the vibrant purples and sapphires of a galaxy cluster, or the classic white of far-away stars and spaceships.

Use a combination of these colours to create a space theme that feels cosy at the same time; just because space itself is cold doesn't mean your child's bedroom has to be! Choose a darker colour for the walls, such as a deep blue paint, and highlight aspects of the room with more vibrant purples, greens and whites.

Spiral galaxy

2. Paint a galaxy

A fantastic way to bring space into your child's bedroom is to paint them a galaxy or a starscape. Choose a dark background, and then gather a small collection of different-coloured paints. The colours you use here depend on the style you're going for; despite our earlier comments, there is no single colour for a galaxy. This means that all colours are on the table, but if you're going for a purple feel, then you'll want to lean into that.

Take a paintbrush and dip it into your paint, and then 'throw' the paint at the wall. This will create a starry effect, and you can focus on an area to make the 'centre' of the galaxy. Work outwards from here, with your 'stars' becoming less and less frequent until you finally have the galaxy. Mix up the colours used to give it dimension! If you feel like getting extra fancy, then you could try different-shaped galaxies, from lenticular to spiral.

If you're not feeling the idea of experimenting with paint, then you could search for space-themed wallpaper or a mural, instead.

Space bedding

3. Launch with space bedding

Lots of kids grow up wanting to be astronauts, so it's no surprise to find out that there are plenty of space-themed bedding sets out there. They're fun and affordable, making them a quick and easy way to update a kid's bedroom whilst ensuring you keep the space theme going strong. Don't forget about the actual bed sheets, as well as the duvet covers! Find some neutral black sheets with stars on them to give them the bed of their dreams.

Shop around and find the perfect bedding for their tastes; maybe they want space unicorn bedding for a fantasy twist, or want to embrace the Force with a Star Wars duvet cover. With so much available, you'll be able to keep the bedroom theme feeling fresh and new for years to come!

Dark bunk bed

4. Houston, we have a bed

Every good space captain needs a good spaceship, and the same is true for their bed! If their kids' bed is still in good condition, then use what you have to give it a galactic feel. If they have a wooden bed, you could repaint it, or if you prefer something less permanent, add stickers or decals. On the other hand, if their bed is tired and they need a new one, then consider investing in something out of this world, such as a mid-sleeper or high-sleeper.

Both often feature space underneath, whether for play or as a desk, which means there's lots of extra room for decorations and display. Either way, the bed is the most essential part of their room, and it's just as important to incorporate it into their theme!

LEGO Stormtrooper

5. Adopt galactic pop culture

As we've mentioned, space has been a constant source of inspiration for centuries, and in recent decades, it has given rise to some of our most beloved pop culture franchises. From Star Wars to Star Trek, Doctor Who to Mass Effect, and countless other series in between, there's plenty to pull from when it comes to space room décor.

We're sure your little one will have a favourite franchise, so why not go the extra mile and incorporate it into their space room? Whether it's adding Master Chief's helmet, Darth Maul's lightsaber or the whole collection of Guardians of the Galaxy, there's lots of memorabilia available to buy to make their space feel out of this world.

Lava lamp

6. Get creative with lighting

When you watch a lot of TV or films set in space, you'll notice that they often have great lighting in the spaceships themselves. So, why not bring that into your child's space room? Go retro with the classic lava lamp (who can resist a rocket-shaped lava lamp?), or leap into the future with neon lighting.

Gaming beds and high sleepers are great when combined with strip lighting, creating a modern feel in the bedroom. If you want to change the feel of their bedroom, then lighting, such as the Philips Hue system, is a must-have. Not only are they easy to control, but you can also change the colour of the lighting. They're also varied, with light strips, floor lamps, and more.
