Easy Ways To Add Nature To Your Bedroom

Easy Ways To Add Nature To Your Bedroom

Rolling hills, luscious green trees and sparkling blue seas in summer or crisp air, crunchy frost and frozen ponds in winter - there's a reason everyone enjoys a day out in nature. The only downside is that you have to come back inside, but what if you could bring nature into your home?

For some people, getting out might not be possible, or you might live in a city with limited access to nature. You can incorporate nature's beauty by adding elements to your bedroom to get around this. It might not be much, but nature has a powerful effect on us. Even just getting out into your garden for a few hours a day can leave you feeling great, and plenty of research supports the idea that nature has many mental health benefits.

What health benefits does nature offer?

Studies have proven a positive link between exposure to nature and improved cognitive function, mental health, blood pressure, and more. Nature also makes us happy - being in contact with nature was found to increase happiness and a better sense of meaning and purpose in life.

Given that your bedroom is your sanctuary away from the world and where you can be at your most vulnerable, we think adding nature's joy into it makes sense. We've come up with a few ways to add nature to your bedroom so you can enjoy some of the benefits in your home.

Simple ways to add nature to your bedroom

Bedroom with houseplants and cat

1. Add mood-boosting plants

Plants aren't just pretty (though they will make your room look nice!). They also offer fantastic health benefits, such as reduced stress levels, improved mood, and air quality. The type of plant you choose to incorporate into your bedroom will dictate the benefits you will get – a snake plant is great at purifying the air, whereas a lavender plant will gently scent the air.

Bedroom with natural lighting

2. Let the natural light shine

Getting a good sleep routine relies on uninterrupted circadian rhythm. Artificial lighting, particularly blue light, can lead to this being thrown off, making it harder for you to get to sleep. As well as this, the reduced amount of natural light we get in the winter in the UK can lead to people suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, which can lead to low mood, lethargy and more.

You can combat this and help establish a healthy sleep routine by ensuring you have as much natural light as possible in your bedroom. Make sure to open your curtains or blinds in the morning to let in the sun, and try to use lighting that mimics natural lighting. At the same time, blackout blinds or curtains can prevent light from passing cars or street lamps from leaking into your bedroom at night.

Bedroom with basket and wooden bench

3. Take advantage of earthy textures

Nature is all about textiles - from the softness of wool to the crispness of leaves to the roughness of tree bark. There are millions of textures in nature, and you can incorporate some of them into your home. Whether adding a corkboard to your wall, a rattan bed, splashing out on an indoor water feature, or decorating with woven baskets, there are plenty of ways to bring the textural smorgasbord nature offers into your bedroom.

Layer these to help create a cosy environment that mimics the comfort nature offers every time you get into bed. You could even add a flower arrangement that mixes fresh and dried flowers for a botanical touch.

Bed with plant patterned bedding

4. Plant patterns are in

A quick way to add the beauty of nature into your bedroom is to incorporate plant patterns wherever you can. This could be anything from cacti or palm leaf bedding to stylised prints or paintings hung over your bed. It might not seem like much, but whether you're committed to creating a beautiful nature-inspired bedroom or can't keep indoor plants in your bedroom (whether because of pets or you're not a green thumb!), just adding plant patterns can create an outdoorsy feeling to your home.

Bedroom in natural colours of brown and green

5. Enjoy nature-inspired colours

If you close your eyes and think of a natural colour palette, chances are you're thinking of luscious greens and rich browns. As such, incorporating these colours into your bedroom is a must if you want to add some of the calming benefits the outside world has. Add green bedding that is complemented by soft brown throws. The colour of your furniture can also have an impact – consider wooden furniture if you can afford a complete room revamp!

Wooden furniture has the added benefit of coming from nature and offering a comforting appeal. There's a reason we've been using wooden furniture for thousands of years! A green bed perfectly complements wooden bedroom furniture, but that's just our opinion!

Cat smelling flowers

6. Bring the smell of nature indoors

Nature is an olfactory sensation, with so many delightful scents available that you likely don't even smell all of them! From the rich scent of dirt to the sharp salt of the sea and everything in between, there are plenty of unique scents to be found outside. We're not advocating for you to make your bedroom smell like a garden centre, but you can add some of the best scents nature offers and add them to your bedroom.

Add an ocean-scented candle if you want to bring some of the wildness of the sea home, or drift off to sleep with a lavender pillow spray. There are hundreds of scents you could pick from, and whilst some may offer great sleep benefits (jasmine is just as good as lavender!), it's up to you to decide what you want to be smelling. Not only that but there is a scientific link between scent and memory, so making your bedroom smell like your favourite memories from the outdoors will make being in bed a joy.

7. Invite the sound of nature inside

We've talked about three senses so far, but what about sound? Putting on a Spotify playlist of nature sounds, whether it's crashing waves, the wind blowing through grass or bird calls, is a common thing people do to go to sleep. Not only is it soothing to listen to, but scientific evidence suggests that listening to the sounds of nature can result in significant improvements in cognitive performance. So it's a win-win!
