Decorating your child's bedroom can be stressful. Children are renowned for changing their minds about what they like, and decorating can be a big undertaking. The solution would be to create a timeless kids' bedroom that will look stylish for years as they grow and won't need too much updating!
The perfect kid's bedroom will be adaptable to their needs throughout the years, as a toddler has vastly different needs from a teenager, but it should still be able to be personalised to their tastes. Finally, the perfect timeless kid's bedroom will be filled with durable furniture that will look stylish years into the future and won't become outdated.
How often should I update my child's bedroom décor?
Big updates to your child's bedroom décor should only be made once every few years to save time, energy, and money. This isn't a hard rule, of course, as you might want to update their bedroom more often, depending on your tastes. But ideally, you shouldn't need to entirely paint the walls every year if you've opted for a more neutral approach.
More minor updates, such as changing their wall art or bedding, can be made as often as you'd like. They aren't very time-consuming and don't cost that much! This is ideal for a kid's bedroom, as what they're interested in will likely change every other month as they grow!
How do I create a kids' bedroom that doesn't date?
So, how do you create a bedroom for your child that won't date quickly? We've put together some helpful tips that hopefully reduce the time you'll need to update their bedroom without diminishing their personality!
1. Choose a neutral colour base
As fun as creative a vibrant bedroom is, it risks becoming dated quickly. Hot pink or baby blue walls might look cool and entertaining, but it means you'll have to redecorate sooner rather than later to avoid them outgrowing their room. To prevent this, paint the walls a neutral colour such as white, cream or other muted colours.
Not only are these easy to maintain, but they will complement any accent colours you add to their bedroom. So when they're young and adore bright colours, all you need to do is buy fun bedding and colourful decorations. As they age up, you only need to replace the smaller pieces instead of going through a full bedroom reset!
Complement the neutral wall colours with timeless choices such as classic oak or pine wood furniture or solid-coloured furniture like black or white. These colours are less likely to date, meaning if you choose the right furniture, they could be a part of your child's bedroom through to their teenage years!
2. Add multi-functional storage
The one thing that won't change when it comes to kids, no matter how old they are, is that they'll need lots of storage! When they're young, it'll be used for their toys, but they'll start to collect things to personalise their room to their tastes as they grow, and storage will be just as necessary.
Choosing multi-functional storage will ensure they have plenty of room to store everything away without buying new furniture as they grow. Plenty of our single beds come with storage, whether a bookcase in the headboard or under-bed drawers. If they're a little older, our mid-sleepers have plenty of innovative storage inside, such as drawers or pull-out desks, whereas some of our bunk beds and high sleepers even include integrated wardrobes!
This not only means they have plenty of space to store all their belongings, but it also helps to free up space in their bedroom by reducing the need for extra furniture. Our mid-sleeper and high-sleeper guide explains why these beds are an excellent choice for kids!
3. Stick to classic themes and colours
Anyone with kids or who's been around kids will know that they're the masters of the fad. Anything new and trending will instantly get their attention, and they'll be desperate to have all the items that will make their friends green with envy. But as much as they'd love to have their bedroom looking like a Peppa Pig cartoon or the next Star Wars film, it's important to remember that they will grow up, and their interests will likely change.
Not only does doing a complete bedroom redecoration for their current interest take up time, but it also costs a lot of money! Instead, maintain a neutral colour scheme, as we mentioned before, and add accessories that can be easily removed. A minimalist kid's bedroom will also give them plenty of extra room for play when they're young!
4. Add accessories and accents
Accessories are the perfect way to personalise your child's bedroom to their tastes without doing anything permanent. Wall art, such as pictures or posters, can be updated as they grow to showcase their growing personality, and their bedding can be swapped out without breaking the bank! An innovative kids' bed can also provide space to display figurines or toys, which can be changed if their interests change.
If they're amenable, you could create a neutral bedroom for them by adding cushions or stylish rugs that will look good for years. Of course, neutral-coloured accents and accessories will only work if your child likes them. As much as we'd love to ensure their bedroom matches the rest of the house colour scheme, it's important to remember that this is their space where they need to feel comfortable and safe!
5. Choose quality over quantity
The key to creating a timeless kids' bedroom is to remember that you want to ensure that everything you buy will last. Buying high-quality furniture for their bedroom means they will have solid furniture that lasts many years. It will also save you money by reducing the need to replace broken or tired furniture in the future.
Furniture made of durable materials such as wood and metal will last longer than other materials, and they often come in more 'classic' styles that are less likely to become outdated. So, to create a bedroom that will last for many years, consider purchasing a metal bed or wooden bed.
6. Think about the future
Much of what we've mentioned in this article concerns future-proofing your child's bedroom. Children's interests will change as they grow, so creating a bedroom dedicated to their latest obsession will quickly become dated, meaning you'll need to redecorate again. Not only that, but your child's needs will change as they grow.
Younger children will need space to play and indulge their imagination, whereas older children will need somewhere to do homework. Planning for the future could mean opting for a mid-sleeper with a pull-out desk when they're old enough - this means they'll have plenty of space to play while they're still young enough, yet they will have somewhere to do their schoolwork when needed.
