With the lighter evenings and blossom sprouting on the trees, spring has marked its arrival. This change of season makes it a good time of year to refresh and rest our bedroom spaces to accommodate those warmer days (and nights!) ahead, in order to get the best night’s sleep possible.
One of the biggest contributors to bad sleep is being too hot (or cold), alongside being disrupted by light exposure, so making a few simple changes within our bedrooms is paramount as we move into spring and summer. It’s also a good opportunity to use these brighter days to give the areas upon which we sleep a deep clean, reorganise and declutter, alongside adding some small spring touches to embrace this seasonal shift.
With these factors in mind, here are five easy ideas on how to rejuvenate and revive your bedroom for spring:

1. Switch out heavy bedspreads for breathable bed sheets
A bed laden with heavy bedspreads and layered with luxurious cushions is very inviting in winter, but you’ll want to avoid thick textiles and multiple textures in spring and summer. Dense, woven fabrics do not allow the body to regulate in warmer temperatures, which in turn will disrupt your sleeping pattern and cause you to wake easily.
Instead, look to high-quality, breathable bedding sets made from natural materials (such as bamboo) that have a temperature-regulating quality. Unlike bed sheets made from synthetic fibres (like polyester), natural bamboo is plastic-free, allowing your body and your skin to breathe and keeping you cool on warmer evenings.
If you are low on space to store your winter bedding, invest in a stylish blanket box that can also double up as a seating bench at the end of your bed. If floor space is limited, compact underbed drawers make it easy to neatly store items currently not in use, without taking up space in your wardrobes or cupboards.
If you still struggle to regulate your body temperature during the warmer seasons and continuously wake due to body heat, it would be wise to look into investing in a cooling mattress before we hit high summer. A cooling mattress is constructed from a specific type of foam that dissipates heat much quicker than standard memory foam, allowing for heat to transfer away from the body quickly without disturbance.
2. Give your mattress some attention to remove allergens
Your mattress is key when it comes to the quality of your sleep, so utilise the warmer days of spring to give it a deep clean to remove dirt particles and allergens. Using a small vacuum attachment, rid your mattress of any dust that has built up within crevices and lightly sprinkle over some baking soda, leaving it for at least an hour before hoovering it away to naturally freshen the surface.
If you have an upholstered bed, give it the same treatment to freshen it up. Remove the mattress and hoover all over to rid your bed of any dirt particles. For small stains, dab away at them with a clean, damp cloth and warm, soapy water. If you think that your mattress looks overly stained or tired and it doesn’t feel as supportive and comfortable as it should, it may be time to invest in a new one. A mattress with a removable cover makes it easier to clean more regularly as it can be unzipped and placed in the washing machine.
We know that the turn of spring brings pollen, making life difficult for those who suffer from hayfever, allergies and other sensitivities. If this affects you, it would be wise to look into hypoallergenic mattress options. A hypoallergenic mattress contains technology that minimises airborne particle exposure that contributes to irritants and reactions, such as itchy eyes, rashes and a runny nose.
These mattress styles also contain a barrier to stop the build-up of mould, mildew and dust mites settling both on and within the mattress, promoting a healthier and happier sleeping environment.
3. Declutter
You may be surprised to learn that sleeping in a cluttered, untidy room contributes to bad sleep! Sleeping in an overly cluttered space can contribute to stress that can affect your sleep cycle as it can heighten anxiety, so giving your bedroom a good spring clean will create a calmer, more soothing environment in which to naturally settle for the night.
To start, clear everything out of your room and give your carpets or floors a deep clean. Take rugs and cushions outside and beat them to rid them of dust and dirt. Open your windows wide to start a circulation of clean air and wipe down all surfaces. When you start to bring back items into the room, consider if you really need them or if they are taking up valuable space.
If you need to store items away, think about whether you have enough storage space or if it would be worthwhile investing in clever organisational furniture, such as a dressing table with lots of built-in storage, or adding more shelves or a bookcase in a kid's bedroom.
One of the best ways to achieve an uncluttered, tidy bedroom is to purchase an ottoman bed, or a bed that comes with specific storage space. An ottoman bed is a bed where the mattress lifts up from the base to provide a wide area of room to store larger items, such as extra pillows, towels, or spare bedding. Alternatively, storage beds come with built-in, slide-out drawers as part of the bed base, making them better suited to storing smaller items, such as throws and clothes.
4. Add some small spring touches to your bedside table
Smaller, simple touches in preparation for spring can be just as significant in improving your sleep for the season. In your bedside table with drawers, make sure to pop in an eye mask to wear at night so that the lighter mornings do not rouse you until you are ready to wake.
On your side table surface, you could also add a small bud vase containing spring flowers by your bedside to embrace the season, or place a dried lavender bag beside your pillow. Lavender is known to calm the nervous system and support digestion, which in turn promotes bedtime relaxation and deep sleep.
5. Add in some springtime shades
Bring spring into the bedroom by including colours of the season, such as the current on trend colour buttercup yellow. According to colour psychology (the study of how different colours affect human emotions), yellow is associated with optimism and energy, so is the perfect boost to wake up to in the morning.
If yellow is not for you, try alternative spring colours such as soft pinks or organic greens, associated with gentleness and calm, which will create the perfect sleeping environment. While you may not want to repaint your walls in these springtime tones, switching up your bedroom colours can be done easily by swapping up your bedding in these hues, adding a colourful chair or stool, or transforming the look of your bed with an upholstered headboard.
Whether you decide to add smaller spring updates or completely refresh and reset your bedroom by updating your bed frame, mattress or storage furniture, these changes can have a big impact on your sleeping pattern and environment, leading to increased sleep benefits and improving your overall health for the season ahead.
