Bunk bed mattresses FAQs

Giving your child all the support they need at night is very important, especially for their growing bodies. Choosing the right loft bed mattress is crucial to ensuring they get good sleep. To help make this easier, we've formulated answers to all the most frequently asked questions!

Is there a special type of mattress for bunk beds?

The only bunk bed mattress requirement is that it be no more than 16cm high. This ensures that the railings on the top bunk can prevent accidents, such as rolling out of bed. Other than that, we're happy to confirm that your child can use any mattress, whether you want to give them the support of pocket springs or the comfort of memory foam!

In our bunk bed guide, you can learn more about bunk bed safety, including choosing a mattress.

How often should bunk bed mattresses be replaced?

Although adult mattresses should be replaced every eight years, we recommend replacing a kids' mattress every three years for children between 3 and 10 and every five years for those between 10 and 16. If the child's existing mattress is older than this, we recommend investing in a new bunk bed mattress as soon as possible!

What sizes of bunk bed mattresses are available?

Given that a bunk bed can accept any mattress as long as it's under 16cm tall, you'll find many size options, but our most common bunk mattress sizes are:

  • Single bunk bed mattresses (3' x 6'3", 90 x 190cm)
  • European single bunk mattresses (3' x 6'6", 90 x 200cm)
  • Small double bunk mattresses (4' x 6'3", 120 x 190cm)
  • Double bunk mattresses (4'6" x 6'3", 135 x 190cm)

Not sure which size you need for your new bunk? Check the product page to make sure you buy a matching size. Make sure to measure their bedroom to see if it can accommodate your chosen size using the handy tips in our measuring guide. Our bed size guide explains all the different sizes to ensure you use the space efficiently.

What type of foam filling is available with bunk bed mattresses?

We have two types of foam available with our loft bed mattresses, including:

  • Reflex foam - a high-density foam that provides support and firmness. Reflex foam is made up of tiny holes that mould to your body shape.
  • Memory foam - a low-resistance foam that reacts to pressure by changing shape. It evenly distributes your body weight, offering comfort and support. Find out more about this innovative foam type with our memory foam mattress guide!

What type of spring structures are available with bunk bed mattresses?

A selection of our bunk bed mattresses comes with two types of springs available. These include:

  • Open coil springs – sturdy and supportive with a series of interconnected springs, an open coil mattress is also called a traditional or Bonnell spring mattress!
  • Pocket springs – comfy and supportive mattresses with hundreds of springs, enclosed within individual pockets of fabric that allow each spring to work independently. Find out more in our pocket spring mattress guide.
