Why does my back hurt when I wake up?

Morning back pain can be caused by issues including:

  • Your sleeping position - some sleeping positions can force your body into an incorrect alignment, which can put pressure on your joints and increase the risk of back pain.
  • Your pillows - depending on what position you like to sleep in, your pillows can also cause back pain. Too many pillows can misalign your spine, leading to back pain in the long term.
  • Your mattress - the wrong mattress type and firmness for your needs can cause sleeping problems such as back pain. Mattresses too firm for your needs will apply pressure, leading to aches and pains. At the same time, a too-soft mattress can make it harder to move around, forcing your back into uncomfortable positions.
  • Pregnancy – unfortunately, there's not really a lot that can be done to help with this until your baby is born, but we have a few sleeping position suggestions for pregnant women to try and relieve your back pain!
  • Pre-existing medical conditions - many medical conditions, including degenerative disc disease and fibromyalgia, can increase the risk of back pain in the morning. If you're looking for the perfect mattress to help alleviate some of the issues associated with fibromyalgia, check out our mattresses for fibromyalgia!

What type of mattress is better for back pain?

To combat back pain, the best type of mattresses will be those that offer enough support to ensure you sleep with a healthy spinal alignment without putting too much pressure on your joints. As such, we'd recommend the below mattress types for back pain:

  • Sprung mattresses - the springs in a sprung mattress offer high levels of support to ensure you can sleep comfortably every night. These mattresses are often covered with a range of padding to ensure you get extra comfort while offering the support your spine needs! Both open coil spring mattresses and pocket sprung mattresses are ideal for back pain.
  • Foam mattresses - a foam mattress, such as a memory foam mattress, moulds to your body shape using your body heat, providing you with customised support that is unique to you. This, in turn, reduces the amount of pressure on your joints, instead cushioning your body.
  • Hybrid mattresses - these mattresses combine the benefits of foam and spring mattresses into one, giving you the best of both worlds. You'll usually find a hybrid mattress featuring a structure of either pocket or open coil springs with a layer of foam on the top, providing plenty of lumbar support for better sleep.

Is a firm mattress better for back pain?

If you constantly wake up with back pain, you might want to consider the firmness of your mattress. A firm mattress might seem like the best idea, but this could cause problems as it could force your body into uncomfortable positions that mean your spine is not aligned, applying pressure to your joints. Instead, we'd recommend a medium-firm mattress, as this will give you the support you need while ensuring enough give to avoid causing pain!

Are orthopaedic mattresses good for back pain?

Yes! Orthopaedic mattresses are perfect for back pain, as they have been specifically designed for this purpose. These mattresses help to align your spine as you sleep, reducing the risk of back pain and helping you sleep better each night. It's important to note that orthopaedic mattresses aren't one-size-fits-all – some people will find one mattress will suit their needs better than another, so double-check before buying.
