A toddler mattress measures 2'3" x 4'6" or 70 x 140cm, which offers enough space for a young child to sleep comfortably as they grow in their toddler bed. It is smaller than a single mattress, which makes it the ideal size as a transition between a cot and a big kids' bed!

A cot mattress is around 1'9" x 4'0" or 53 x 120cm, making a toddler mattress slightly larger. This means that while you could put a cot mattress onto a toddler bed, it will not correctly fit it and will likely slide around, while a toddler bed mattress will be too big for a cot. We recommend choosing the correct size to match your child's bed to ensure they get all the support they need.

We recommend that 140 x 70cm mattresses be used by children between the ages of 2 and 4. If they're younger than this, they should ideally still be in a cot bed, and others should be moved up to a bigger bed, such as a small single bed.

Ideally, you'll want to purchase a 70 x 140cm mattress on the firmer end of the scale, with medium firmness being the softest you should go. This is because your child needs lots of support for their growing body, and softer surfaces such as foam can cause incorrect spinal alignment and pressure on their joints.

Another downside to foam mattresses is that they can be harder for a toddler to roll over. A firm toddler mattress is preferred to support a growing toddler's body. Due to the heat-sensitive nature of foam, they might also struggle to regulate their temperature, so we'd recommend opting for a foam-free toddler mattress where possible!
