Choosing a new bed can be a tough decision, as it will be the focal point of your bedroom and needs to combine comfort, style and durability. To help make your decision easier, we've answered some of the most frequently asked questions!

There are bed frames available for purchase in various sizes to suit any bedroom. There is a standard set of bed sizes available to buy, which are:

• Small single beds (2'6 x 6'3", 76 x 190cm): A great size for children or small bedrooms, these beds are a little thinner than their single counterparts, making them a great way to save on space.
• Single beds (3' x 6'3", 90 x 190cm): A standard size that's suitable for all sleepers, whether it's a child, a teenager, or an adult. They're perfect for pretty much any size of bedroom.
• Small double beds (4' x 6'3", 120 x 190cm): A little bigger than a single, but not quite as wide as a double, these beds are often called queen beds and can sleep two if you don't mind snuggling up.
• Double beds (4'6" x 6'3", 135 x 190cm): A popular size for couples, these beds will usually be able to fit into at least one bedroom in your home. They're also great for solo sleepers wanting a little extra space.
• King-size beds (5' x 6'6", 150 x 200cm): A great choice if you're looking for a little extra space when sleeping, whether you're alone or a duo. They're not only wider than a double, but also longer!
• Super king-size beds (6' x 6'6", 180 x 200cm): A must-have for anyone who wants to prioritise space whilst they sleep, these beds are a whole foot wider than a king-size! This means there's more than enough space for two to sleep without even touching.

It's essential to note that all these dimensions are approximate, which means there may be slight differences depending on the bed. For example, a TV bed is likely to be longer than other bed sizes, primarily because the footboard needs to be large enough to fit a TV. Don't worry, though; all our beds will still be able to accommodate their matching mattress size.

If you're a couple in the market for a new bed, then there are ideally three sizes you'll want to consider, with one being our preferred size! You have the classic double bed option, which measures 4'6 "x 6'3" and is usually suitable for at least one room in any home. Our double bed guide provides more information about this particular size, if you'd like to learn more. A super king-size bed is another choice, but its 6' x 6'6" size means it's limited in how many bedrooms it can actually fit into.

We personally think the best bed size for a couple is a king-size bed. At 5' x 6'6" in size, it's wider and longer than a double, but is a foot thinner than a super-king. This means that you both have plenty of space to sleep comfortably without getting in each other's way, and their longer length makes them great for taller sleepers, too. Our king-size bed buying guide provides a wealth of information and answers to help you make an informed decision.

So you're ready to buy a new bed with a frame! Make sure you choose the right one for you by taking into the following factors:

1. Bed size

You will need to choose a size that provides the optimal amount of sleeping space for you, taking into account the size of your bedroom. Our range includes a variety of sizes, ensuring there is something for everyone.

2. Bed base

You'll also need to consider what bed base you need. This supports your mattress and plays a crucial role in the comfort you feel every night, so it's essential to get it right. There are three main types:

• Solid slats
• Sprung slats
• Divan base

Solid slats are typically made of timber or, in some cases, metal bars, and are fixed horizontally across the bed frame. They are sturdy and have very little give, so they can make your mattress feel firmer. Because the slats are spaced (usually with a 7.5-9cm gap between them), this bed base aids air circulation to keep you cooler during the night.

Like solid slats, sprung slats have more give due to their slight curvature upwards. This bed base can react more effectively to your movements during the night, thereby extending the lifespan of your mattress. Platform top divan beds feature a solid bed base, while a spring divan base offers greater cushioning thanks to its built-in springs. The former may make your mattress feel firmer, while the latter can help it feel softer.

3. Bed style

Bed frames come in various materials and colours, so whether you're looking for something to blend in with your existing décor or a bold bed that can make a statement, we have you covered.

Wooden beds are a timeless option that is particularly great if you often change your décor but don't want to change your bed frame to maintain a matching style. While also neutral, metal beds are usually seen as a more contemporary style, especially when paired with a sleek silver finish.

To make a bolder style statement, explore upholstered and velvet beds in bold colours. Sumptuous upholstery in rich colours and even modern neutrals is an easy way to add glamour to your room, creating that sought-after luxury hotel feel.

Each comes with a different required care level; we recommend exploring our material care guides for more detailed information. You can be confident that they'll match no matter what bedroom décor you choose.

4. Bed features

In terms of size and style, you'll need to consider what you need from your new bed in terms of functionality. For example, do you need the space-saving properties of a bed with built-in storage? Would a high bed that's easier to get in and out of suit you best? Is your perfect Sunday morning spent lounging in bed watching your favourite TV shows?

We recommend pinning down your main priorities, whether aesthetics, space-saving abilities, practicality, or longevity, and going from there.

We're proud to offer a wide range of bed types, enabling you to find the perfect bed frame tailored to your specific needs. Below, we've rounded up our most popular types so you can see at a glance which one is right for you:

• Divan beds: Featuring a wooden frame usually upholstered in fabric, divan beds are often considered space-saving options as the mattress sits directly on top of the base. Many divan beds feature built-in drawers.

• Ottoman beds: A type of storage bed that has a base that lifts from the side or foot end, revealing the whole frame inside to store anything and everything, from bedding to toys.
• TV beds: If you enjoy winding down with a show or film, our TV beds are perfect with storage for a TV in the footboard. Find out more in our TV bed buying guide.
• Guest beds: Always be ready for visitors with a handy guest bed, whether they're planned or unexpected! From sofa beds to innovative trundle beds, they're all designed to offer maximum comfort whilst still saving on space.
• Platform beds: Modern and trending, these low bed frames maximise space in your bedroom without compromising on style.
• Rattan beds: Cosy and contemporary with plenty of charm, rattan beds offer a light and airy look to any interior!

What makes a comfortable bed is entirely dependent on personal preferences, and it's essential to remember that your mattress is primarily responsible for determining whether you have a comfortable and supportive sleep. The wrong type of mattress not only disrupts your sleep, but can also cause aches and pains instead of relieving them. Take a look at our mattress buying guide for more information.

If you like to rest against the headboard and watch TV or read a book, then you'll want to choose a bed with a padded headboard. This makes it comfy to sit against, and it also helps to make a room seem warm and cosy! Another factor to consider is the size of the bed, as a king-size bed offers significantly more space and is generally more comfortable than a single bed. This is particularly true if there are two of you sleeping in a bed, as there's nothing worse than accidentally kicking each other at night!

This depends on a few factors, but the most important one is your personal preference. Getting in and out of a bed is different depending on whether it's low or high. A higher bed means you get to pretty much slide off the edge and be standing immediately, but they're also a little harder to get into, particularly for older people.

On the other hand, a lower bed is a great way to make even the smallest room seem bigger, and they're great for children to get in and out of. If you're older than a child, though, then you'll find that they require a bit more effort to get out of, as it is. This means that if you have any back or knee problems, then getting out of a platform bed can be a bit of a struggle.

Either way, there's no definitive answer about whether a low bed or a high bed is better; it's all down to what you want your bed to do!

Small bedrooms mean you're constrained on space, so deciding on the right bed can be a bit more challenging than with other room sizes. In terms of size, you're limited by the available space. You'll find that most rooms, even box rooms, can accommodate a single bed, and some might even be able to stretch to a small double.

However, a small room doesn't have to mean you settle for a basic bed, as there are numerous great options available that help you make the most of every inch of space. A bunk bed means that siblings can share a room if needed, or there's always somewhere for a friend to stay over. Many bunk beds feature built-in storage, whether it's shelves built along the back or a pull-out drawer underneath.

High sleepers and mid-sleepers offer ample room for sleeping, but they also come with numerous innovative features. You'll usually find that there's plenty of storage in the form of drawers, cupboards and shelves, with some even featuring a built-in wardrobe. Some even have a desk built into the frame underneath the bed or as a separate feature that is pulled out when needed. This means you can reduce the amount of excess furniture you need to buy, making smaller rooms feel bigger.

Our space-saving beds guide offers valuable information to help you make an informed buying decision, and our dedicated blog features the best beds for small rooms.

If your bed is kept in good condition, you can generally expect it to last comfortably for around seven to fifteen years. Some bed frames will last longer, while others may need to be replaced sooner. Regularly check for loose screws and potential cracks. We recommend doing this every six months to keep your bed in optimal condition; add it to your regular bed cleaning schedule so you don't forget.

You may find that addressing some smaller issues can help you avoid the need to buy a new bed. Our guide on fixing and reinforcing a bed frame provides numerous tips on how to potentially extend its lifespan. Don't stress too much if you hear some creaks or squeaks; these may be fixable! Our guides on fixing a squeaky metal bed or fixing a squeaky wooden bed will help you here. If you've found any cracks, depending on their location, you may be able to replace the affected part, such as a slat. If you've a lot of broken slats, it's time to invest in a new bed.

If it's a case of simply replacing the bed you already have, then you'll hopefully already know what size bed you want. However, if you're moving to a new location or considering an upgrade to a larger size, you'll need to measure your space. This will ensure you buy a frame that fits into the space; as great as a super king is, it won't fit in many bedrooms.

Our measuring guide provides lots of handy tips, but the main thing to remember is that there needs to be enough room not only to fit the bed in, but also to allow you to move around it. If you opt for a storage bed, you'll also need to factor in the extra space required to access the storage. All our beds have their dimensions listed, so once you've measured out your space, you can determine which bed will fit.

Yes, you can buy a bed without a headboard; it depends on your personal preferences. Many are available to purchase as bed bases only, allowing you to customise your setup in a way that suits you. You can add a headboard when you buy your frame, explore headboards separately, or opt for a platform bed style without a headboard.

Most of our bed frames do not come with a mattress as standard, but we offer a range of mattresses for you to choose from when purchasing your bed. Simply visit the product page or basket and select from our range of mattresses, or browse our extensive collection to search by sleep problem, position, firmness level, and more.
