We recommend that heavier people choose a firm mattress, or a medium-firm mattress, as this will provide the support they need to ensure correct spinal alignment. A mattress works by pushing back against the body; the heavier someone is, the more weight the mattress needs to push against.

A softer mattress creates extra comfort by allowing a person to 'sink' into it. Unfortunately, this will not provide the levels of support that a heavier person will need, and due to the extra effort of turning around, it can risk extra injuries.

Memory foam mattresses are renowned for their unique, supportive nature, but we would only recommend one of these mattresses if it were high-density and firm. This is because memory foam works by contouring to your body, which is comfy but could lead to heavier people sinking too far into the mattress and struggling to get out in the morning!

Instead, we recommend opting for a hybrid mattress with a spring structure and a layer of foam, which offers the best of both worlds!

Heavier people should opt for thicker mattresses, such as those over 30cm, as these mattresses generally have more layers. This means that more is inside the mattress to accommodate the sleeper, ensuring heavy sleepers get all the support they need! A thick mattress can also help to reduce the risk of the mattress sagging or sinking, helping to increase its lifespan.
