Mattresses For Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition which causes chronic pain and fatigue, which thousands of people in the UK suffer from. It can also make sleeping much more complex, as the pain a fibromyalgia sufferer experiences makes relaxing and drifting off to sleep hard. As a result, their daily life might be impacted due to feeling tired, which can exacerbate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Choosing the right mattress can help alleviate some of these symptoms, so we've carefully curated our collection of mattresses for fibromyalgia to help you get restful sleep!

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is described by the NHS as a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body. Some of the symptoms of this condition can include:

  • Muscle stiffness
  • Difficulty getting or staying asleep
  • Increased sensitivity to pain
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Low moods

There are many more symptoms of fibromyalgia, but if you think you might be suffering from this condition, then it's essential to speak to your doctor to get assessed.

Why does fibromyalgia affect sleep?

Due to their increased sensitivity to pain, people living with fibromyalgia can find falling asleep much more challenging than other people. Sleeping on a hard mattress or a mattress with too many springs can cause aches and uncomfortable sleep for normal sleepers. However, for people with fibromyalgia, these mattresses could be causing actual pain, as their threshold for pain is much lower.

As a result, people find sleeping harder and can, in turn, find staying asleep a chore. This, in turn, causes fatigue and tiredness during the day, which only exacerbates the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It has also been found that people living with fibromyalgia are more likely to experience insomnia and restless legs syndrome, two sleep-related problems that can make getting to sleep hard.

What mattress firmness will suit someone with fibromyalgia?

We would recommend the following mattress firmness ratings for those with fibromyalgia:

  • Soft-medium mattresses – these mattresses lean more towards the softer end of the scale to give you extra comfort but still have enough firmness to offer support where it's needed.
  • Medium mattresses – a medium mattress is an excellent choice for most sleepers. It is ideal for those suffering from fibromyalgia, as it will not put too much pressure on the body.

One of the critical things to remember with fibromyalgia and mattress firmness is that you don't want to buy a mattress that is too firm. This can lead to extra pressure on your joints, which can be very painful when sleeping or trying to fall asleep. At the same time, you will want to avoid soft mattresses, as these mattresses won't give you the support you need.

It's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all mattress, as what suits one person with fibromyalgia will not suit another. Consider your needs, and if necessary, consult with your doctor to ensure you choose the right mattress for fibromyalgia.

What is the best mattress type for someone with fibromyalgia?

If you have fibromyalgia, then we'd recommend one of the following mattress types:

  • Memory foam mattresses – a memory foam mattress offers custom support to your joints, helping to relieve pressure on them.
  • Hybrid mattresses – our hybrid mattresses combine a supportive spring structure with a comfy foam layer, such as memory, latex or reflex foam, giving you the best of both worlds.

We must again point out that what works for one person might not work for another, so it's essential to decide whether one of the mattress types will suit you best or if you might prefer something like a pocket-sprung mattress instead.
