We've got mattresses for every sleeper

Not every mattress will suit every sleeper, so you'll be happy to know that we've got a wide range of mattresses, from classic open coil mattresses to high-tech hybrid mattresses that combine foam and springs into a single, comfy option. Need more support during the night? Our firm mattresses are the perfect choice! Looking for something more suitable for a child? A medium mattress will give them all the assistance they need to get a supportive sleep for their growing body.

Choose a mattress for any bed size

The size of your bed will dictate which mattress size you need, and we're pleased to say that we've got mattresses for every bed size and type. So whether you're looking for a small single mattress to suit a kids bed or a super king mattress to give you the best sleep every night, you'll find the perfect mattress. Looking for a mattress to suit the top bunk of a bunk bed? Fear not; our bunk bed mattresses are the ideal height to let the safety railings do their job!

What is the best mattress to buy?

There is no right answer regarding the best mattress to buy – the best mattress is subjective to each sleeper and depends on what you're looking for. Some people might need more support to alleviate aches and pains, leading them to opt for a firm orthopaedic mattress. Others might want to prioritise comfort over everything else, so they could prefer a soft pillowtop mattress. Looking for more information about what mattress types are available? Make sure to check out our mattress buying guide!

Another thing to consider when shopping for a mattress is your sleeping position, which can affect which mattress will be supportive and comfortable enough for you. Those who sleep on their front need extra support to reduce their torso from sinking into the mattress, whereas side sleepers might want a softer mattress to ensure they get the correct spinal alignment. Thankfully, we've got you covered with a series of guides focusing on the best mattresses for side sleepers and the best mattresses for front sleepers.

What are the different types of mattresses available?

Pocket sprung mattresses

A pocket sprung mattress features thousands of springs sewn into individual pockets. This means they operate independently from each other, making them particularly ideal for those sharing a bed as the individual pockets help reduce the risk of you being jostled awake by a partner.

Open coil mattresses

Open coil mattresses , also known as traditional spring mattresses or Bonnell spring mattresses, feature a network of connected springs inside the mattress that evenly distributes weight. These traditional mattresses are often the most affordable, offering comfort and support.

Memory foam mattresses

One of the most popular mattress types, memory foam mattresses feature innovative technology originally designed by NASA that uses your body heat to contour your body. This gives you high levels of support, and your mattress will return to its original position the next day.

Hybrid mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine the support of spring mattresses with the comfort of foam mattresses to give you the best of both worlds. These mattresses can feature memory foam, latex foam, reflex foam or even gel foam for the ultimate comfort.

Latex foam mattresses

A latex foam mattress will mould to your body during the night, offering plenty of relief for your body's pressure points. Latex foam is also ideal for those suffering from respiratory problems, as it is both hypoallergenic and anti-microbial.

Orthopaedic mattresses

An orthopaedic mattress is designed to offer high levels of support to promote healthy spinal alignment, making them ideal for those who suffer from aches and pains at night. Ortho mattresses are usually firmer than other mattresses to give you the support you need.

Reflex foam mattresses

Reflex foam mattresses are a great alternative to memory foam mattresses, as they are made out of polyurethane foam to mould to your body and promote spinal alignment. These mattresses are affordable for those looking for support and comfort at a lower price.

Rolled mattresses

Rolled mattresses are a fantastic bed-in-a-box innovation, as they offer the same benefits as a normal mattress but with the added benefit of being vacuum-packed and rolled for convenient transporting. Another benefit is that you will get fresh quality from the factory, as it is vacuum-packed and then opened in your home!

What size mattress do I need?

The mattress size you choose depends on the size of your bed, so if you've bought a single bed, you should buy a single mattress. To avoid gaps or overhang between your mattress and the frame, you should always opt for a mattress the same size as your bed. The most common mattress sizes to buy are:

  • Small single mattress (72 x 190cm)
  • Single mattresses (90 x 190cm)
  • Small double mattresses (120 x 190cm)
  • Double mattresses (135 x 190cm)
  • King size mattresses (150 x 200cm)
  • Super king size mattresses (180 x 200cm)

We also stock a range of European-sized mattresses, which are required for certain European-origin beds, such as IKEA beds and more. These sizes include:

  • European single (90 x 200cm)
  • European small double (120 x 200cm)
  • European double (140 x 200cm)
  • European king size (160 x 200cm)

Not sure which mattress size you'll need to buy? Check out our mattress size guide to compare the differences between each size.

Why is mattress firmness important?

The firmness of your mattress will dictate how comfortable and supportive it is to you as you sleep. Softer mattresses offer less support than firmer mattresses, and there is a range of firmness levels between these two. Our mattress firmness levels include:

Choosing the right mattress firmness for you will depend on a multitude of factors, including:

  • Your weight
  • Your sleeping position
  • Your personal preference

Those who weigh more will appreciate the support a firm mattress will provide, whereas those lighter may find that a soft mattress offers the comfort they need. Use our mattress firmness tool on this page to find out the best type of mattress for your weight.

Also, the position you sleep in can affect which firmness level you should choose – front sleepers will need to avoid soft mattresses as they will force your spine into an unnatural alignment, whereas side sleepers will want something that will contour to their pressure points.

How often should I change my mattress?

It's widely recommended that you replace your mattress every eight years. If you've had yours for longer than that, or if there are visible signs of damage, you're waking up with aches and pains, or it's no longer comfortable, it could be time to change. For more information, look at our guide on how often you should change your mattress.

Can I recycle my mattress?

Yes, you can recycle your mattress here at Happy Beds when purchasing a new mattress, and there are also plenty of outside mattress recycling choices across the UK! Find out the closest recycling service to you with our mattress recycling page!

Choosing the mattress recycling option means enjoying a new mattress while being given peace of mind that your old mattress will be broken down and all its usable parts will be reused. We answer all the important questions about this in our mattress recycling guide!

How can I clean my mattress?

Cleaning your mattress can help increase its lifespan, and it's very easy to clean without needing specialised cleaning! To learn more, check out our mattress cleaning guide for everything you need to know to keep your mattress in top condition.
