• Solid slats
• Sprung slats
• Divan base

Solid slats are timber or sometimes metal bars fixed horizontally across your bed frame. They are sturdy and have very little give, so they can make your mattress feel firmer. Because the slats are spaced (usually with a 7.5-9cm gap between them), this bed base aids air circulation to keep you cooler during the night.

Like solid slats, sprung slats have more give in them as they are slightly curved upwards. This bed base can react better to your movements during the night and improve your mattress's lifespan.

Platform top divan beds feature a solid bed base, while a spring divan base offers greater cushioning thanks to its built-in springs. The former may make your mattress feel firmer, while the latter can help it feel softer.
